Hamburg, 3 September 2026
Loud music echoes from the bustling Reeperbahn, the wind whistles furiously across the Elbe and cars speed along the streets. Yes, here at the Empire Riverside Hotel we love the hustle and bustle of the big city in all its forms, because that’s what makes our neighbourhood what it is.
But sometimes – just sometimes – even we are drawn to the great outdoors. There’s a real sense of anticipation for the ultimate natural spectacle in northern Germany: the flowering season of the Lüneburg Heath.
Although it may be hard to believe, every year from 8 August to 9 September the Lüneburg Heath transforms into a veritable sea of flowers, its deep purple hue unrivalled anywhere else.
It is not only lovers of colourful flora who will find something to their liking here; keen hikers can also combine extensive heathland walks with this purple natural spectacle.
However, a day trip to the Lüneburg Heath from the Empire Riverside Hotel isn’t just ideal during the flowering season. All year round, it serves as a retreat for anyone who finds the big city a bit too hectic at times. It takes just one hour by car from the Empire Riverside Hotel to reach the hiking car park, from where you can immerse yourself straight into the sea of purple blossoms.
Just like our colleague Vera, who will be taking you on a day trip to the blooming Lüneburg Heath in 2026 today.
Read lessBy car, you can set off from the Empire Riverside Hotel towards the Elbbrücken and take the A1 and A7 to junction 43 (Bispingen), heading towards Bispingen/Behringen. From there, follow Seestraße, Haverbecker Straße and the L211 to your destination: the hiking car park in Oberhaverbeck.
There, you can easily pay a daily fee of €7 at the ticket machine, either in cash or by card, and you’ll find yourself right in the heart of the heathland action.
Not only does the car park have space for motorhomes, but it also has a small café with toilets and a souvenir shop selling all sorts of local specialities.
Step out of the car and into the joys of the heath! Walking through the little village of Oberhaverbeck, past old farmhouses in the brick-and-timber-framed style, you’ll reach the blossoming heath in just a few minutes’ walk.
Right in front of you, the Turmberg rises imposingly, inviting you to take a short but steep detour. It is a climb that is rewarded with a breathtaking view over the vast, flowering heathlands.
From there, you can stroll in various directions through the sea of purple flowers. However, the path straight ahead towards Wilsede is particularly recommended.
After your first walk through the flowering heathland, you’ll soon reach the little village of Wilsede, which is hard to beat when it comes to cosiness. The old thatched farmhouses and passing horse-drawn carriages transport you straight back to another era.
Despite its rustic heathland charm, Wilsede offers not only a museum and a souvenir shop but also a wide range of places to stop for a bite to eat.
Our tip: the little café Mein Teegarten! With a delicious, freshly baked cake, you can find a cosy spot here in the large garden, surrounded by free-range chickens. A particular highlight? The tortoise enclosure with three cute tortoises.
Refreshed by a stop for coffee and cake, you follow the well-signposted paths from Wilsede to Wilseder Berg, the vantage point overlooking the Lüneburg Heath.
At 169 metres, the Wilseder Berg holds the title of the highest hill in the North German Plain. With its panoramic view across the flowering heathland, it certainly lives up to its title, as you’d be hard-pressed to find a better vantage point over the Lüneburg Heath.
From there, you can either walk back to the car park or head back to Wilsede to enjoy the full Lüneburg Heath experience once more: the Gasthaus Zum Heidemuseum serves delicious local specialities such as Heidschnucke ragout or fresh blueberry lemonade from the heath.
