Our second Sustainability Day

At this year's 2nd Sustainability Day on 8 January 2024 at the Empire Riverside Hotel and Hotel Hafen Hamburg, we once again underlined the fact that sustainability is more than just a word for us - it is a conviction we live by. This day was characterised by informative workshops that gave us deep insights into various aspects of sustainability.

It was important to us not only to provide information, but also to familiarise the audience with the extent of the issue of sustainability, particularly in our industry. As a large company with around 250 employees, we feel it is our duty to set a good example, to be a role model for other companies and to use examples to show that even the smallest changes are a big step in the right direction.

Impressions of the day

An overview of our workshop programme

Our workshops covered a wide range of topics: from the essential role of bees in the global ecosystem to diversity & inclusion in the hotel industry, social integration and job opportunities for homeless people. Victoria Knauer-Hansen shared best practice examples, while Anna Manzke focussed on the self-determination of people with disabilities. Viva con Agua sensitised us to clean drinking water and highlighted the global challenges in this area.

PLACE4BEES

Bees play a key role in our global ecosystem. With their pollination service, they are fundamental to biodiversity.
But bees need our help. In Europe alone, around 20% of bee colonies die every year.
While there were still around 2.5 million bee colonies in Germany in 1950, today there are only around 950,000 - this means a decline of almost two thirds, for a variety of reasons.
A corporate bee project means visible environmental protection on site and active support for local biodiversity. PLACE4BEES was founded with the aim of strengthening modern and healthy beekeeping in the city and surrounding areas. We are a passionate team with a lot of expertise in beekeeping and we are united by our fascination for the world of bees and the desire to make beekeeping structurally strong enough to prepare a good future for our native honey bees.
Our workshop is about:

  • The bee & its role in our global ecosystem
  • A look inside the bee colony - fascinating facts and a first basic knowledge of beekeeping
  • Honey - how is it made and what are the differences?
  • Urban beekeeping - why urban beekeeping works so well
  • beesupporter - what can you actively do to support the bees?

Anna Manzke

Hi, I'm Anna Manzke, I've been stranded in Hamburg since 2006 (I'm actually a real coastal kid) and I work as a social worker. During and after my studies, I was able to gain a lot of experience in a wide variety of areas (residential groups, day centres and outpatient care for people with disabilities, mother-father-child facilities, KIDS work with homeless minors, training support in the trades for young people with disabilities/mental illnesses, FSJ coordination...). I am currently working with people with disabilities again. I have always been interested in the self-determination and participation of people with disabilities, especially those with cognitive impairments. Leisure activities, sexuality, choice of occupation, place of residence, etc. are usually a matter of course for us, of course we have a choice here! But have you ever thought about what it would be like if you didn't always have a "choice" and were often dependent on the support of other people, perhaps even unable to communicate verbally?

After a little self-awareness, I would like to discuss this with you and look in particular at the areas of "career choice" (what options are there, what are the chances of finding work on the primary labour market, etc.) and "sexuality" (partnerships, sex education, sexual assistance).

Zeit für Zukunft

Zeit für Zukunft - Mentoren für Kinder e.V. is once again taking part this year. As one of the largest voluntary mentoring programmes in Hamburg, we have been arranging sponsorships between adults and children with less favourable starting opportunities in the Hamburg city area for 10 years. We have a mission - we want to sponsor every child in Hamburg who needs a mentor.

In our workshop, you will learn how we define sustainability, how you can apply as a volunteer mentor, how we as volunteer mentors have organised our sponsorship and, above all, what the sponsorship gives back to us.

Viva con Agua

Viva con Agua is an international network of people and organisations committed to clean drinking water. From the very beginning, everything followed one vision: WATER FOR ALL. There are now many thousands of people who volunteer for Viva con Agua. At numerous events, football stadiums and concerts (e.g. at the Empire Riverside), you can see committed people raising awareness of the issue of water. Everyone can join in is the motto. The organisation also collects donations digitally in order to carry out its work.
They want to

  • know what the global drinking water situation is like?
  • understand why your coffee consumption and new laptop affect the water situation?
  • learn where individual water saving has an effect?
  • find out more about the projects in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique and South Africa?
  • take part yourself?
  • And what does Viva con Agua actually have to do with hotels?

Victoria Knauer Hansen - GreenSign

I am Victoria Knauer Hansen, I have been working in the hotel industry for 18 years and have worked for the industry worldwide. As Sustainability Manager at GreenSign, my focus is not only on sustainable practices, but also on the important topics of diversity and inclusion. With the "AVA- Herz drauf" initiative, I am particularly committed to people with disabilities. In my workshop, we will be looking at a fascinating topic: Sustainability in the hotel industry and the relevance of a certificate. Together we will take a look at the current status quo of sustainability in the industry and discuss the impact certificates have on visibility and for stakeholders. You can look forward to an interactive and informative session!

OLL INKLUSIV

OLL INKLUSIV is about how to involve seniors & senioritas and people 60+ in current events, take them by the hand and include them in a world that still belongs to all of us: the young and the old, whether in the digital world or analogue.
This is why the non-profit Hamburg-based initiative is creating a vibrant network that is open to all people 60++
"I've been involved in several retirement homes for years. I take an incredible amount from the conversations for my own thoughts and actions. Because when I talk to people about their condition and their memories, about their professions and goals, hobbies and passions, I always learn what is really important in life. In the current situation, we also talk a lot about our fears. And about what gives us courage. Seniors & Senioritas teaches me to be grateful every day for health, family, friends and the beautiful little things in life." (Founder Mitra Kassai)

What can you expect in the AGISM workshop?

  • how do we want to grow old? is 70 the new 30?
  • Is there a kind of cultural consensus on when youth begins and old age ends, regardless of personal views?
  • what does it mean to grow old and to be old?
  • How does inclusion work in everyday life?
  • Does an initiative like Oll Inklusiv raise the bar to be fit and active in old age instead of watching TV on the sofa?
