The tourism industry has become a key player in the global economy thanks to the steady increase in international travel. In 2019, according to data from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism industry contributed 10.3% to global GDP and employed more than 330 million people worldwide. According to figures from the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the number of transnational tourist arrivals worldwide has increased tenfold in the last 50 years, reaching a record high of 1.461 billion in 2019.

Since we as a hotel and as employees are part of this system, we also have a great responsibility towards the inhabitants and ecosystems of this world. It is important to understand that our decisions and actions in everyday life, both privately and professionally, influence the world and its future.
Whether these effects are negative or positive is entirely up to us.
Read lessOll Inclusive is an inspiring Hamburg initiative that focuses on actively involving "Seniors & Senioritas" as well as people aged 60+ in today's events. In a world inhabited by both young and old - digitally or analogously - the nonprofit organization strives to create an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.
The founder, Mitra Kassai, emphasizes the enrichment she gains from her conversations with seniors in various senior residences. These conversations about memories, professions, hobbies, and fears teach her to appreciate the true values of life. The initiative reflects these values by establishing a network for people over 60 years old, serving as a bridge between generations.
Through Oll Inclusive, a connection is created between generations, showing that life in all its facets is shared by all of us, regardless of age or background.

A new pilot project was launched at our hotel in September this year. Against the backdrop of the above-mentioned autonomous behaviour in everyday life and the responsibility we bear as employees in the tourism industry, we have decided to take a close look at ourselves.
Read moreAs part of a project, one of our dual work-study students analysed food waste in the in-house restaurant for employees and, with the help of the technical manager and the head chef, created a precise monitoring system for food waste. The information gained from this enabled us to map the actual volume of waste for the first time and put it in relation to the quantity produced. This enabled us to map whether we have an excessive amount of food waste in our restaurant for employees or whether we are already calculating it well.
Based on the new data, the extent of various influencing factors, such as the behaviour of the employees when filling the plates or the calculation rates of the kitchen when preparing the dishes, could now also be recorded. The causes of waste and weak points in the supply system could thus be better isolated and can now be optimised in a targeted manner.

On 8 January 2024, we will again spend the whole day bringing our colleagues up to date on the latest developments in our sustainability project.
We will present our goals for the year, share the latest developments, projects and successes and also talk transparently about our challenges.
It is extremely important to us to keep all employees equally informed, involved and actively participating in this process. Because only together can we manage to make tourism even more sustainable and keep our industry up to date.
After our plenary session, we will continue as usual with a wide range of workshops organised by our partners. From social engagement and hands-on practices to biodiversity, everything will be covered again and we are already looking forward to it.
In January, you will be able to read a summary of our second Sustainability Day here on our sustainability blog.
