On 7th January 2025, it was time again: the third Sustainability Day was organised at the Empire Riverside Hotel together with the Hotel Hafen Hamburg and offered a stage for all those who want to actively contribute to a more sustainable future. This special day was all about responsibility, rethinking and action. This year, together with committed partners and experts, we delved deeper into the various facets of sustainability in five exciting workshops - from environmental protection to social responsibility and animal welfare.

Anna Manzke

Anna Manzke, a social worker with extensive experience in working with disabled people, shared her perspective on sustainability and social participation in the workshop. Working in Hamburg since 2006, she has worked in areas such as residential groups, day centres and care for people with cognitive impairments. In her workshop, she encouraged the participants to think about self-determination and participation, especially when it comes to topics such as career choices and sexuality. She spoke about the challenges that people with disabilities often face when making decisions and highlighted how important it is to offer them equal opportunities and support - both in the working environment and in the area of partnership and sex education. Anna Manzke encouraged an open exchange about these often overlooked topics and showed how we as a society can shape an inclusive and sustainable future.

Zeit für Zukunft

In the workshop organised by Zeit für Zukunft - Mentoren für Kinder e.V., it became clear how important education and personal support are for a sustainable future. As one of the largest voluntary mentoring programmes in Hamburg, Zeit für Zukunft has been arranging mentorships between adults and children from disadvantaged backgrounds for the past ten years. The organisation's mission is clear: every child in Hamburg who needs a mentor should also receive a mentorship. In the workshop, the participants learnt how sustainability is understood in this context and how they can get involved as mentors. The workshop emphasised not only the positive impact on the children, but also the personal enrichment that sponsorships bring. Zeit für Zukunft shows that volunteering and promoting education can have a long-term, sustainable impact on society.

Hanseatic Help e.V.

The workshop organised by Hanseatic Help e.V. showed how sustainable aid and social responsibility go hand in hand. The Hamburg-based aid organisation collects donated clothing and toiletries, which are made available to people in need in Hamburg and around the world. It carries out important work with its ‘Hanseatic Help Stores’ and regular aid shipments to crisis regions such as Ukraine and Syria. The workshop shed light on the challenges of textile collection and distribution, the impact of textile production in the countries of manufacture and the role each and every one of us can play in terms of sustainable consumption. Hanseatic Help shows how sustainable support and responsible consumption can go hand in hand.

Hamburger Tierschutzverein von 1841 e.V.

In the workshop, the Hamburg Animal Welfare Association (Hamburger Tierschutzverein von 1841 e.V.) provided valuable insights into the daily work of the Süderstraße animal shelter, which takes in and cares for around 9,000 animals every year. From medical services to rehoming or releasing animals back into the wild, the organisation is an important point of contact for animals in need. Participants learnt how the association actively implements animal welfare, how both domestic and wild animals can be helped and how animal welfare can be integrated into everyday life. One exciting aspect of the workshop was the question of how animal welfare practices can be given greater consideration in the hotel and catering industry in order to have a positive impact on animal welfare there too.
